Mick O’Brien
Mick O’Brien, originally from Ballycanew, Co. Wexford, is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s most passionate advocates for traditional and folk music. For 24 years, he presented Ireland’s longest‑running Irish folk music radio show, a programme that became a cultural touchstone for listeners at home and abroad until its conclusion during the Covid era.
Mick’s deep connection to Irish folk music is rooted in his upbringing in a county council housing estate in the 1980s—a time marked by unemployment, emigration, and a severe economic recession. Growing up amid these challenges, he discovered a sense of identity and expression through music. A pivotal influence in his life was poet and songwriter Pat Rossiter, whose friendship and mentorship opened the door to the world of folk traditions. Through Pat’s guidance, Mick found a musical language that helped him make sense of the world around him and sparked a lifelong devotion to Irish folk culture.
Alongside his broadcasting career, Mick is the frontman of the award‑winning Irish folk band The Druids, known for powerful performances that blend history, storytelling, and a strong social conscience. His work—both on air and on stage—continues to celebrate Ireland’s musical heritage while giving voice to the experiences of ordinary people.
